A lot of dog owners have the misconception that crates are bad for their dogs and will only cause them to become depress. Since they feel that putting their dogs in to crates is a kind of punishment, they do not believe in crate training puppies. They cannot be further from the truth. In fact, if used correctly, crates can seem like a den to their puppies and they will feel safe and comfortable when they are inside the crates.

You can make the crate comfortable for your puppy by adding in cushions for your puppy to sleep on. The crate should also be placed in the central area of your home so that your puppy can easily see what is going on around it. That will make your puppy feel warm and safe. You may also want to add in a toy or a dog treat for the puppy to entertain itself so that it will not feel bored.

However, when crate training puppies, it is essential not to leave your puppies in the crate for long hours right from the start. You can start off by leaving it inside the crate for 10 to 15 minutes first. The length of time can be extended slowly after some time. Crates are useful places to leave your puppy in if you have to be away from your home for a few hours and your puppy has to be left alone.

To make the crate less intimidating for your puppy, it should be in the house before you bring your puppy home. Leave the crate open so that your puppy can start searching for it when it gets into your house. Looking for a den is a natural instinct so once it finds the crate, it will start to wander in and out of it. You should praise your puppy when it gets into the crate so that it will know that it is doing the right thing. When you are crate training puppies, it is important to use lots of positive re-enforcement instead of scoldings.

Praise your puppy if it enters the crate on its own and close the door after it goes in. Do not let it just because it whines or fusses. Instead you should let your puppy settle down in the crate first. If you want to be successful at crate training puppies, you cannot give in easily. You need to be patient and consistent so over time, your puppy will learn that it is the safe place for it. You will be surprise but after some time, your puppy will love to sleep inside the crate and also play in it.
