There are a good deal of animals in the world and many of them we know and learn about in school. But what about the other animals that we normally forget about and overlook? There are still hundreds of animals that we know about – but we seldom ever think about and don’t even know much concerning them. One of the most intriguing of these animals is the ostritch.

When many people think about the ostritch they think of how they set their heads inside of the ground when they are frightened. This was a rumour that was started by the Roman philosopher – Pliny the Elder. This is not a true fact – but is similar to what they do in reality. When trying to hide from prey they position their heads wholly on the ground and bend down. This makes the deception that their heads are obscure inside of the ground.

These rather great birds are most linked to the penguin than any other bird. This is because they both have something in common – neither of them actually have the ability to fly. But what they do not have in flying they pay off for in speed. Their long legs grant them to run as fast as 45 miles per hour – which they are able to do for half an hour.

There are three well recognized ostritch races that we know of. Yet, only one of them – the African black ostritch – lives in captivity. It is this species that is utilized for farming, meat, and to create unique ostritch leather products.
