Take Care of Your Puppy

By Stacey Newson

All pet owners feel that they have found the perfect pet.  Puppies are cute and they make great pets.  How will you know when you have found the perfect furry companion?  The search for the right puppy can take weeks or even months.  While you are searching for your pet, keep in mind the breed and type of dog that want.  Are you looking for a large or small puppy?  Some dogs make better pets than others.  There are few things that you will need to think about before you make your decision.   Will you have enough time to care for your puppy?  Is there enough space available in your home to let your pet run freely?  Are you ready for a long term commitment?  All of those questions are important.  You should ask these questions before you make a commitment to buy a pet.  The relationship between you and your pet will develop over time and you will need patience’s.  Your puppy will have to be fed and housebroken, this will take time.  Choose a reliable vet close to home, because the first year, a lot of time will be spent there.  Puppies will need regular visits to a veterinarian for grooming, shots, and to make sure that they are eating healthy.

Now that you have found the right puppy, become familiar with its nutritional needs. Puppies usually feed off their mothers for the first couple of weeks after birth.  By the time your puppy is six weeks old it should start eating dry food.  Most veterinarians recommend dry kibble foods for a well balanced diet.  Choose a puppy food that will give your puppy the proper balance of highly digestible proteins, vitamins, minerals, and calories that they will need to grow and stay healthy.  Meat is usually the main ingredient in your dog’s food.  Choosing food that is high in meat content and low in grain content will help build strong muscles.   Your puppy will need a certain amount of fat and oil in his diet, mostly for his skin, but also for proper brain development.  For this reason the fat ingredient in your puppy’s food should list its source.  If it is a low quality fat content, it will not be easily digestible.  It may be a good idea to get a recommendation from your breeder or a veterinarian concerning your puppy’s nutritional needs.  Always check the product label to find out if the food is recommended for puppies.  Feeding your dog table scraps is not recommended.  Table scraps are usually high in calories and are not fortified with the vitamins and minerals that your puppy will need.

Bonding and building a relationship with your dog, is like building any other relationship.  You will have to spend time with your pet.  It is important that you take the time to walk your dog.  Puppies have lots of energy, they love to play and you will enjoy playing with them.  Take care of your puppy and give it lots of hugs and kisses, and your pet will protect you with its life.
