Your dog is part of the family and you never want top leave him behind when you take a trip, but unfortunately it’s not always convenient to travel with Rover.  Though your dog loves it and it’s usually quite fun to travel with a pet, sometimes it’s better to leave them behind.

Of course you don’t want to leave your dog with strangers at a boarding kennel.  Anyone who has ever been inside a kennel can feel the loneliness the dogs are suffering.  But as long as the trip is a short one, the kennel will do him no long term harm and may be less traumatic than an extended trip in a car.

Not only do most dogs suffer stress from long car rides, it can also be difficult to find accommodations on the road that accept animals.  Even if everything is perfect, you will likely still have to keep your dog in a crate for extended durations which can lead to problems.

Once you arrive at your destination, what will you do with the dog?  Even if you find a dog friendly hotel, the rest of the establishments may not be so tolerable.  This will require keeping your dog in the room while the family enjoys the trip.  This isn’t fair for the dog and can lead to problems in the hotel if the dog is likely to bark or cry when left alone in a strange setting.

If you’ve decided to leave the dog behind with a relative or family friend, you must ensure that they are truly willing to take your dog in for the duration of your trip.  Some people will accept out of kindness even though caring for your dog may cause them stress.  These situations should be avoided for the harm they can do everyone involved.  Just because your dog behaves himself perfectly when yopu are around, it doesn’t mean he will be so calm when you leave him for several days.

If you can deal with all the adversities involved with travelling with a dog, it is a rewarding experience.  Dogs can add a lot to many types of vacation as, long as you plan activities that are dog friendly.  Trips to a dog friendly beach are a good example, as is camping.  Dogs love the water and the outdoors and can provide hours of entertainment to the kids.

If you are planning on taking your dog on an extended trip, make sure he is used to car travel by taking him on several shorter trips.  Many dogs are very agitated when travelling for long periods of time and a vet might prescribe a sedative to help them sleep during the trip.  Other dogs are susceptible to nausea and may require medicine for that.

Don’t let the small inconveniences stop you from taking your dog on the trip.  Just make sure that you plan accordingly and don’t get hit with any surprises.  Dogs love to be with their families no matter where the trip takes them.  If at all possible, keep the entire family together and take the family dog along.
