People are increasingly keeping chickens – it’s becoming more popular as people have realised that not only do you get a regular supply of free range eggs, but you also have the pleaseure of keeping chickens.  But I’m sure you already know of the benifts that are associated with keeping chickens, else you would not have found this article.  So you’re next question is surely “where do I keep my chickens?”.  The obvious answer – you may think – would be to buy a ready-made chicken coop, but where would the fun be in that, and, most importantly, why spend all those hundreds when you can build a chicken coop yourself for a fraction of the cost?

In the following article I will guide you through the process involved in ‘how to build a chicken coop’.

Chicken Saftey
The first issue that needs to be addressed is how to ensure the saftey of your chickens; you will eed to ensure the chickens are protected from predators.  To acheve this bury the outside runs that surround the chicken coop to a depth of roughly one foot.  This should deter all but the largest predators.

Easy Maintenance
Next we want to ensure our chickens are free from illness, so cleaning the chicken coop is important.  It is therefore advisable to build a hen house that makes cleaning as quick and easy as possible.  Install doors that open inwards, not outwards; slope the floor at a low angle towards the door – this will assist you when hosing the chicken house down with water and disinfectant due to the inbuilt natural drainage.

Build a Chicken Coop that is Warm and Bright
Chickens in their coops need to be kept warm in the winter, but also ventilated.  To achieve this, insulate the structure of the walls – this will keep the chicken coop dry in the wet months but warm in the winter season.  Also, we want the windows of the chicken coop to face the sun so that it lets in more light which acts as a warming tool.  Another good type is to install a lighting system as not only does it serve as a good heating source, it means that you can see your lovely chickens at night!
