Grieving the loss of a pet is not an easy thing to do.  When a beloved pet passes on, many people have trouble coping with grief and loss.  This article will discuss four tips for coping with the death of one’s pet.

The loss of a pet is a traumatic event. Allowing yourself the proper time to grieve is very important.

You may be experiencing extreme feelings of guilt over the loss of your pet.  You may be questioning whether or not you did enough for your pet, or wondering if there was something you should have done but didn’t.  All of these feelings are very distressing, but completely normal.

You may be feeling very alone right now, and not think that anyone else understands.  Here are some tips to help you in coping with the grief and loss you are feeling over the death of a pet:

1) Have a memorial for your pet. A memorial is a great way to remember all of the joy and happiness your pet brought into your life. It doesn’t have to be a huge or expensive undertaking, just something meaningful.  You could buy a small stone memorial for your yard, plant a garden, or even scatter your pets ashes in a place it liked to spend time in.  This ritual will be therapeutic for you while allowing you to remember and honor your pet’s memory.

2) Give yourself some time to heal. Losing a pet is often like losing a member of the family or a best friend. The good news is that the pain will subside in time. It’s hard to believe that at the moment, but it’s true. Time does heal the deepest wounds, and it’s something you should take comfort in knowing. The amount of time it will take differs for everyone.  If you had your pet put down, it’s not uncommon to feel uncertainty and regret in your decision.

3) Don’t think about getting another pet right away. Many people think that getting another pet immediately will lessen the pain they are feeling. And it might, for a short while. Each pet is special and if you rush out and get a replacement right away, you may experience even more regret and pain, especially if the new pet looks or behaves similarly to the old one.

4) Talk to others who have lost a pet.  It’s even a good idea to write about your pet.  You can write a short story about a funny incident that you and your pet enjoyed.  I had a friend that wrote a children’s story in which his dog was a hero and saved the life of a child.  He took comfort in knowing that the story brought joy to others, especially children.  He wrote the story because he remembered that his dog had loved children.
